Shiatsu, meaning “finger pressure” in Japanese, is a form of therapeutic bodywork rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, similar to acupuncture and Tui Na, but it primarily utilizes finger and palm pressure rather than needles. It focuses on restoring the flow of Qi (vital energy) throughout the body by applying pressure to specific points along meridians, the energy pathways. Unlike Western massage, which often targets muscle relaxation, Shiatsu aims to address imbalances in the body’s energy system, promoting self-healing and overall well-being. Practitioners use their fingers, thumbs, palms, and sometimes even elbows, knees, and feet, to apply sustained pressure to these points, fostering a deep sense of relaxation and releasing tension.

A Shiatsu session typically takes place on a mat on the floor, with the recipient fully clothed in comfortable attire. The practitioner carefully assesses the client’s energy flow and applies pressure to specific points, often holding each point for several seconds. These pressure techniques are combined with gentle stretching and joint mobilization to release blockages and promote the smooth flow of Qi. Shiatsu is not simply about physical manipulation; it emphasizes the connection between mind and body, promoting a sense of harmony and balance. It is used to address a variety of conditions, including stress, pain, fatigue, and digestive issues, and is known for its ability to induce a deep state of relaxation and promote a sense of well-being. The gentle, yet focused, approach of Shiatsu creates a calming and restorative experience.
